We’re delighted to launch our Lughnasa page, produced in conjunction with Miss Campbell’s and Mr Burns’ 2023/2024 P7 pupils, from St Joseph’s Primary School in Carryduff. Just click on the word before the 👂, to hear how it’s pronounced in Irish. This “Four Seasons Project” was funded through an Ultach Fund grant to Carryduff GAC.
If you’d like to hear our Primary School children, PJ and Jamie telling you about Lughnasa, just click on the 👂 below.
Lughnasa, an Irish Festival (👂)
Lughnasa (Lúnasa 👂) is a Gaelic festival marking the beginning of the harvest (fómhar 👂) season. It is held on the 1st of August, or about halfway between the Summer solstice (Grianstad 👂) and Autumnal equinox. Lughnasa is said to have been founded by the god Lugh as a funereal feast and athletic competition-funereal games (the Tailteann Games) to commemorate the death of an earth godness. In Irish the name was ‘Lugasac.’ This is a combination of Lug ( the god Lugh ) and ‘Nasad’ ( an assembly ) which is unstressed then used as a suffix.
Lughnasa was a very important Celtic festival, as it was a time when Celtic farmers were gathering the food that would keep the tribe alive during the dark winter (geimhreadh 👂) months.
