Carryduff GAC has received significant grant funding from the Ultach Fund to help promote the Irish Language across the community in Carryduff. The funding will allow us to deliver a project in which we:
1. Install a sculpture along our walkway which will be lit (with sustainably sourced timber) for one night at the beginning of each of the four key Celtic festivals of Samhain, Bealtaine, Imbolc and Lughnasadh.
2. Create 4 ‘decks’ of QR code-etched stainless steel (150mm x 100 mm) ‘cards’ that will be placed around our community walkway. Each deck relates to one of the pagan Celtic festivals and will link to a webpage containing a brief description, the derivation of the word and details about how the festival was celebrated. Each of the QR-cards will provide a link to information on an aspect of the festival and include the written and spoken word by the inclusion of hyperlinked audio files which will be marked with an👂🏽 icon.
3. Provide an opportunity for our young members & local Primary schools in the club’s catchment area (ie Millenium Integrated, Carryduff Primary, Cairnshill Primary, St Joseph’s & St Ita’s) to research these festivals and generate the information for each of the 4 decks. We hope, in liaison with the teachers, to prepare a “competition brief” during which groups of up to 4 children will examine each of the Celtic festivals and, by utilising online resources, prepare an A4 typed page outlining folklore of each of the four festivals and will provide the information for each of the card decks. The winners will have their entries digitised and made into a card deck, which will be accessible at each station on our Community Walkway in Carryduff. Each of the 4 winning entries will have the opportunity to provide an audio recording of their winning entry and the parents of the winning entrants will be asked to light the “fire beacon” to signify the start of each festival. If you are a teacher & would like your class to participate in this programme, please don’t hesitate to contact us via email
