U12 Match Reports, 9th April 2017
Carryduff U12s played their second games in the East Down league on Sunday. Fresh from the win over RGU Downpatrick, Carryduff A travelled to Kilcoo to play a home side who had notched up a huge score in their opening game. This proved to be a very competitive encounter, with Carryduff playing some great football before falling to a strong Kilcoo team.
Carryduff started brightly in a very even first half and hit two goals, one from a Cameron McClure free kick and a second, cracking, effort from the impressive Ryan Sherry. Kilcoo were moving the ball well at the other end and two goals in a couple of minutes set the platform for them to take a three point lead into the break.
Kilcoo threatened to pull away in the early stages of the second half, but with their defence led by Oran McMeel and Lorcan O’Hagan working overtime, Carryduff dug in. To their credit, the Duff hit their own purple patch with points from the hardworking Oisin McGurk and some lovely scores from Eoin Blaney. When Lorcan O’Connor hit the net for a third Duff goal the game was right back in the balance with only four points between the teams. However, as Carryduff tired they began to offer up a series of scoreable frees to the home side and Kilcoo pulled away to secure the win in the closing stages. Final score Kilcoo 5-12 Carryduff 3-10.
In Division Two, Carryduff B hosted Teconnaught. This was another competitive game with Carryduff competing well against a physically strong visiting outfit. The sides traded scores for most of the first half before Teconnaught hit two late goals in quick succession to lead by six at the break. Carryduff came under pressure at the start of the second half but battled hard to keep in the game before Teconnaught confirmed the victory with another major. Final score Carryduff 2-5 Teconnaught 5-7.
While the results did not match those of the opening week, there were plenty of positives to take from the games. At times, both Carryduff teams moved the ball well and they worked hard to compete with physically strong and skilful opponents.
There are no games on Easter Sunday, but before then the full squad will play challenge games at St Brigid’s on Wednesday evening.
