This first round game in the Down Minor League saw Michael Cusacks take on Craobh Rua from South Armagh in Pairc Esler under lights. This year Michael Cusacks is an amalgamation of Carryduff, Newry Shamrocks and CPN Warrenpoint, all of whom name insufficient numbers at Minor level to field on their own. The amalgamation allow three clubs to provide their minors with competitive games and hopefully help bring them through to Senior hurling. It will also benefit the Down Minor League by fielding a team of 15 and ensuring more even games.
The first half was a scrappy affair and winter rustiness was evident in the stickwork. Craobh Rua scored an early goal which gave them a one point lead at half-time (1-02 to 0-04), with Cusacks’ scores coming from Conor Murphy (3) and and an Eoin Maguire 65. The second half saw some improvement as Cusacks started to find more confidence in their play, with two goals from Eoin Rooney pushing the score beyond the reach of the South Armagh men. Rooney also added two points to his tally, as did Eoin Maguire from frees. Billy Campbell and Tiernan Murphy also found their range with long range points. Craobh Rua only managed two second half points from frees. The final score was Michael Cusacks 2-10, Craobh Rua 1-04
