ACFL Division II Carryduff – v – Newry Shamrocks
12 May 2017 Páirc Aodha Dhuibh
A strident Carryduff emphatically claimed another valuable two league points at Páirc Aodha Dhuibh with a relentless display against Newry Shamrocks. Despite Shamrocks registering the first score of the game in the first minute – a point from Kevin Hegarty – Carryduff settled quickly into routine and Ronan Beatty (4th) James Guinness (6th) and Joe McFlynn (8th and 11th) rattled four points from play to give Carryduff the advantage in the opening quarter Daniel Kane kicked the visitors second point in the 12th minute but it only served to further consolidate the Carryduff efforts and further points from Beatty (13th) Neill McGowan (15th) and Joe McFlynn from a free (16th) and from play (17th) gave the home side a six point advantage. Owen McCabe’s goal (20th)really brought the home support to life, extending Carryudff’s advantage and really piling the pressure onto Shamrocks.
An ill-disciplined response saw three Shamrock players pick up yellow cards in as many minutes for persistent fouling as referee Eugene O’Hare and his officials worked well together to address some of the on-field antics.
James Guinness fired two further points from play (24th and 25th) before Jody McGovern’s 26th minute goal gave Shamrocks something to be positive about after a rare lapse of concentration from an otherwise dominant Carryduff defence. Niall Cunningham added Shamrocks third point of the half in the 28th minute to leave the half-time score
Carryduff 1-10 Newry Shamrocks 1-03
Shamrocks opened the second half with a bluster but stout Carryduff defending forced two wides out of what attacks Shamrocks could muster and some clever football saw three Carryduff points in as many minutes from Beatty (34th), McCabe (35th) and McFlynn (37th) adding to the Newry outfit’s woes.
As Carryduff dominated Shamrocks found their frustrations coming to the attention of the referee with concerning regularity and following two further yellow cards he was left with little alternative but take further action which saw centre-back Mark Digney issued with a red card after hauling down Ronan Beatty when the pacy corner forward was bearing down on the Shamrocks goal. Beatty dispatched the resultant penalty to the net (43rd) and converted a free a minute later after Shane Hanna picked up Shamrocks sixth yellow card.
Shamrocks, now a player down could find no way through the resolute Carryduff defence with what meagre possession they did manage to garner and the game was well over before entering the final quarter. But there was to be no Carryduff let-up nor any reprieve for Shamrocks James Guinness pointed twice 945th and %1st, free) and Beatty converted a further free (47th) before Carryduff had two further goals in quick succession form McCabe (52nd) and Beatty (54th). The ball never made its way back towards the Carryduff defence as their forwards saw the last five minutes of the game out with Beatty converting a further free (56th) before a rasping shot from James Guinness Rattled the crossbar. His next effort was much more clinical, his 59th minute goal the last score of the game.
An impressive Carryduff performance and an impressive scoreline –
